He is known for his textbooks in the field of calculus and precalculus, which have been used by over a million students each year. Larson has also written a number of books on the history of mathematics, including A History of Mathematics: An Introduction, which was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1988. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and a recipient of the Mathematical Association of America's Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. He has also received the Mathematical Association of America's Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics.
