Michael “Mike” Helton, born August 30, 1953, is vice chairman of National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. In November 2000, he succeeded Bill France, Jr. as the 3rd president of the company. In February 1999, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer at NASCAR.
Helton was appointed senior vice president and chief operational officer in February 1999. He became the first outsider to oversee NASCAR’s day to day operations. Helton was elected President of NASCAR a year later and currently sits on the five-member board.
On October 25, 2015 it was announced that Helton would contribute to pre-post race coverage that weekend from Talladega as a fill in for Dale Jarrett with Krista Voda and Kyle Petty.
On race day Helton occupies an observation point referred to as “control” where he and NASCAR officials observe the events. On February 10, 2015, Helton was named Vice Chairman of NASCAR by NASCAR Chairman Brian France. Helton remained the senior NASCAR official at all national series racing events overseeing competition, and he remains a member of the board of directors.
Near the end of 1999, NASCAR signed a new television network deal. The Daytona 500, NASCAR’s premier event, was broadcast in 2001 under the new deal. However, it was marred by the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. on the final lap. Helton said that it was “undoubtedly one of my most difficult announcements” after the race. However, he added, “After the accident in turn 4 at end of the Daytona 500 we’ve lost Dale Earnhardt.” This tragedy was the start of a seven year NASCAR design program to create the Car of Tomorrow. Helton championed this effort to improve driver safety, and it was put into practice for the 2008 season.

After college, Helton was an accountant and refereed basketball and football. Helton was introduced by a fellow referee to an AM radio station, where he eventually became the sports director.
