Julian Kuo Biography
Julian Kuo is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 24, 1961 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In 2010, when Taiwan was able to sign the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with China in the year 2010, Kuo was designated the spokesperson of a committee convened by the DPP to oppose the accord. Kuo took part in a primary contest for Taipei 2 in 2011, but was not chosen as a DPP Candidate for this seat. Kuo was invited to speak at a public forum at Hong Kong in August 2016 however, Hong Kong authorities refused to grant the invitation to speak. Kuo came back to parliament in September, assuming Wellington Koo’s place following Koo was forced to quit his position to lead the Ill-deserving Party Assets Settlement Commission.
Kuo has scathingly attacked his criticism of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement signed in 2010 and called the agreement “a travesty of an agreement” which would make Taiwan being economically dependent to China in the event that China forced other nations to withdraw of free trade deals with Taiwan.
In the year 1998 Kuo was appointed the director-executive of the DPP’s Policy Research and Coordinating Committee. Following his resignation, Kuo and Lin Cho-shui suggested for the DPP amend its charter in order to recognize the Republic of China as Taiwan. The plan was not successful and no amendments were ever made. After Chen Shui-bian’s election into the office of president in 2000 Kuo demanded cross-party alliances as well as an alliance government to be established. In 2001, however, Kuo said that he opposed suggestions to have would see the Democratic Progressive Party form a coalition government. Instead, he favored the scenario where the DPP was disbanded and revised its charter of the party to appeal to more supporters before reregistering as an political party. Kuo was elected first into his position in the Legislative Yuan later that year as an official of the DPP in recognition of the efforts the party put into ensuring a fair election in the northern part of Taiwan by requesting supporters to cast their votes for candidates using the number on the voter’s identification cards. In his first term, Kuo supported a bill to prohibit active political leaders of owning media companies as well as hosting television programs. Kuo was chosen to stand up for the referendum on cross-strait relations in March 2004 and was also a candidate for Jaw Shaw-kong. In his successful election, Kuo received NT$26.35 million in political donations, which is the third-highest amount of the election cycle. in 2006 Kuo did not attend a discussion about China policy out of protest because Chen’s administration had announced changes to China policy. Chen Administration had made changes but did not reach for his Legislative Yuan. Kuo changed districts for 2008 elections for the legislature, deciding to contest for the seat of Taipei 3, against John Chiang, and lost.
