Wood is born in Yorkshire, England, 2 February 1958. She was a student at Ackworth School near Pontefract, West Yorkshire. She was an athlete as a young girl and dreamed of the possibility of becoming an Olympic sprinter. She trained at a university. She then went on to St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London where she graduated in 1981.
