Wood is born in Yorkshire, England, 2 February 1958. She was a student at Ackworth School near Pontefract, West Yorkshire. She was an athlete as a young girl and dreamed of the possibility of becoming an Olympic sprinter. She trained at a university. She then went on to St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London where she graduated in 1981.
The month of October, 2002 was when Wood became the focus of spotlight by the highest percentage of victims from in the Bali bombings were admitted to Royal Perth Hospital. She was the leader of a team that worked to help 28 patients suffering Between 2 and 92 percent body burns, fatal infections, and delayed shock.

Wood created a company today named Avita Medical in order to commercialize the procedure. Her venture was founded following the arrival of a schoolteacher at Royal Perth Hospital in 1992 suffering from burns that affected 90 percent of the body. Wood was drawn to the new technology in the US of tissue culture for his survival. working night shifts in a lab alongside the scientist Marie Stoner. They began to study the field of tissue engineering. They went from creating layers of skin cells to applying cells and gained a world-wide reputation as the pioneers of their field. The company began operations in 1993. They now cultivate tiny biopsies into larger quantities of skin suspensions of cells in as little than five days. This is a service that is utilized by doctors in Sydney, Auckland and Birmingham. Cells are delivered by aircraft and then used within a day or two in many instances.
