Darrin Nelson Biography
Darrin Nelson is one of the most popular and richest American football running back who was born on January 2, 1959 in Sacramento, California, United States. On the 17th of October 1989, following his refusal to make the trip to Dallas the team, he became the target of trade to San Diego Chargers in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick (#116-Reggie Thornton). He was the third running back, following Marion Butts and Tim Spencer. In September of 1990 He was released, and later signed a new contract. It was his fourth year as a running back that particular season.
In 1991, he was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Vikings. He was a backup running back behind Herschel Walker and Terry Allen and was also the team’s kickoff returner for two seasons. On August 30, 1992, he was released and later re-signed. He announced his retirement on June 30, 1993.
Nelson spent 15 years in the administration at Stanford University. In 2011, Nelson became the Senior Associate Athletic Director for the University of California Irvine.
As a running back Nelson was a danger as an runner and a receiver from the backfield. He is perhaps most well-known for kicking the game-winning touchdown on the fourth down in the final moments during the 1987 NFC Championship Game. In 1988, Nelson was absent for three games because of an injury.
Nelson was chosen from The Minnesota Vikings in the first round (7th overall) of the 1982 NFL Draft. In his rookie year the player was a victim of a strike shorter season that was cut to 9 games. He was 2nd on the team, behind Ted Brown with 136 rushing yards.
In 1989, he staged an acrimonious contract holdout and lost his starting position to D.J. Dozier. On October 12, Nelson was traded to the Dallas Cowboys as part of the Herschel Walker Trade. At the time he had appeared in 5 games as a backup, registering 67 carries for 321 yards and 38 receptions for 380 yards.
